May 24, 1883: The Brooklyn Bridge Opens

130 years ago today, the Brooklyn Bridge opened to the public.

The Brooklyn Bridge was the first Ken Burns documentary to be broadcast on PBS. Explore Burns’s Brooklyn Bridge timeline, which shows the progression of the Manhattan-Brooklyn Bridge, which was the premier engineering feat of its time, and puts its construction in greater historical context.

Five major scandals the media isn’t obsessing about

think-progress:

Are these things more important than edits to talking points? Judge for yourself.

1. Carbon pollution reaches historic highs, threatening human existence

2. The devastating impact of sequestration on kids, cancer patients and first responders.

3. Massive cuts to food stamps for the most vulnerable.

4. 1,100 workers die in a Bangladesh factory collapse, and American retailers continue business as usual.

5. 4,150 gun deaths from gun violence since Newtown.

"Stop trying to ‘get it together’. The biggest lie we’re told when we’re growing up is that soon as we’re adults, as soon as we’re in college, finish college, get that job, have that steady income, find that someone special, ‘find ourselves’, find that perfect house, get that retirement fund, have those children, everything will fall into place. Here’s a secret: it won’t. Every new development in your life, good or bad, big or small, will come with its own very special set of challenges. The sooner you accept that, the better off you’ll be."
